Transformers in the city.

Last year’s Transformers film did more than just put a spark behind the Transformers toy merchandise. It started a madness. Pretty soon, every little boy in Davao began bugging his dad for a bumblebee, an optimus prime or a barricade.

Initially, there was an abundance of Transformers Toys that arrived in the city just before TF mania took over. Then came the unexpected: the kids did get their transformers – even the unpopular ones – and soon the restocks were scarce. It turns out that Hasbro (producers of the Transformers) was only able to produce a limited number of toys.

The result was inevitable: the few items that did arrive were hoarded and sold at exorbitant prices. For example, bumblebee figures originally priced at 700 were sold at JS Southmall for 2,ooo pesos! Talk about making profits and taking advantage of clueless parents!

Anyways, here’s a guide regarding the correct pricing of Transformers Movie Toys:

Deluxe Figures: 699.75 php
Voyager Class Figures: 1,350 php
Leader Class Figures, 2,999 php
Fast Action Battlers: 699.75 php

Most Transformers items available at JS Southmall are horribly overpriced (like a Voyager Class Optimus Prime being sold at 2,500php instead of 1,350php). Several items at Gasiano Mall are overpriced too, but not as bad as Southmall’s. Besides, the figures for sale at Gasiano Mall are relatively rare and in demand even in Manila… so their pricing is still a bit reasonable. As far as I know, the only stores selling the TF’s at the right price (Suggested Retail Price) are Toy Kingdom and Toy Express, both located in SM Davao. Be warned though that they’re often out of stock as far as TF’s are concerned.

Today, Transformers-mania seems to have cooled down a bit… but with the upcoming Transformers Animated Series at Cartoon Network, I expect another mad rush once the new toys arrive this summer. Hopefully, Davao toy stores will have enough stocks for all kids and collectors in Davao.
